Buenos Aires Roundtable on Energy Integration On August 13, the Institute will hold a half-day conference on the current status of carbon trading, lessons learned from other markets and the potential for carbon trading in the Southern Cone. Attendees at the August 12 roundtable are invited to participate in the August 13 conference without charge. Separate registration for the August 13 event is also available. U.S. official praises Calderón for “dramatic” steps Art & Culture: Photos and Textiles Festival costumes, traditional clothing and handmade textiles created in artisan villages were displayed by Andean textile expert Cynthia LeCount Samake, who talked about the Quechua culture and the talented weavers who create the unique designs. Also on display were more than 40 striking images by La Jolla photographer Jeffrey Roth, who captured the stark beauty of life in the high plains of the Andes. The Institute's guests sampled Peruvian beverages such as chicha morada and Inca Kola along with papas a la guancaina, an appetizer served with a piquant sauce. Davidow named IOA President Jeffrey Davidow has been named a member of The Partnership for the Americas Commission convened May 14 by the Brookings Institution. Walker joins IOA S. Lynne Walker, a veteran correspondent whose Mexico coverage garnered some of journalism’s top awards, joined the Institute on April 14 as Vice President. Walker, the Copley News Service Mexico City bureau chief before joining the Institute, covered Mexico, Central America and Cuba for 15 years. Her in-depth reports were recognized with the American Society of Newspaper Editors Award for Diversity Writing and the Maria Moors Cabot Prize, presented by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism for outstanding coverage of Latin America. In 2004, her four-part series on the impact of migration on a small Illinois town was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. Tablewski authors book chapter on water programs Lee Tablewski, the Institute’s director of Professional Workshops and Project Mexico, is the author of a chapter in a new book published by Palgrave Macmillan entitled, “Can Latin America Compete? Confronting the Challenges of Globalization.” Geopolitics of Energy Workshop Looks At Case Studies of Successful Companies Journalists, legislative assistants and company executives met last month at the Institute for a comprehensive, four-day workshop on the geopolitics of energy in Latin America. Professionals from Mexico, Bolivia and the Dominican Republic reviewed case studies of energy companies such as Venezuela´s PDVSA and Petrobrás of Brazil. They also examined a study of Chile´s state copper company, CODELCO, and its successful management of copper extraction, exports and private investment while maintaining 100% ownership.
