The potential benefits of electric integration in Central America have long been touted, particularly the economies of scale that may be facilitated as larger electric generation projects aim to tap into a regional market. Efforts to date have centered on interconnection of the region’s electric grid, the Central American Electrical Interconnection System (SIEPAC) and creation of a new, regional electric market (MER).
After many years of development, SIEPAC is poised to open a new chapter in Central America's electric infrastructure and market. Huge progress has been made, but hurdles remain, particularly with regards to the development of the MER and issues surrounding the project and regional regulatory processes.
The current status of the roughly 1,800 kilometer electric transmission line and the corresponding regional marketplace will be the featured discussion points of this forum with electricity officials from across Central America.
