Women leaders discuss empowerment at Institute of the Americas workshop There are no translations available.LA JOLLA – Women from seven Latin American countries are attending a ground-breaking empowerment workshop at the institute of the Americas this week entitled, “Women Leaders: From Poverty to Power.”

The women, all leaders in their communities, traveled from seven countries to attend the Aug. 23-27 workshop.  The women represent Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico and a wide spectrum of professions.
Latin American students study ocean science, climate change at Summer Science Camp There are no translations available.LA JOLLA – High school students from 12 Latin American countries researched ocean science, plant ecology and marine life during a two-week Summer Science Camp at the Institute of the Americas.

Twenty-two students, who received scholarships to attend the July 26-Aug. 6 camp, were selected because of their desire to conduct scientific research or work in the medical profession once they graduate from college.
IOA energy team visits Baja’s first wind power project There are no translations available.LA RUMOROSA, Mexico -- The Institute of the Americas energy team visited this windswept area between Tecate and Mexicali in August to learn more about Baja's first wind power project.

On a 103-acre parcel of barren hillside sits a 10-megawatt project, the first of its kind south of the border.  Conceived of, paid for and managed by the state of Baja California, the $26.1 million project has five towers, each measuring 256 feet, as well as an energy collection facility and control center.
