Sustainable development issues affecting project finance were also examined. 6/11/1999 Emerging Masters of Baja California-Art Exhibit La Jolla, California The Institute of the Americas welcomed the works of six Mexican artists to the Copley International Conference Center in its first Emerging Masters exhibit. The works were on loan from the Gallery Eclipse of Encinitas, CA, through October 1999. 6/23/1999 - 6/24/1999 Southern Cone Transportation Roundtable Punta del Este, Uruguay The collaboration of the Inter-American Development Bank with the Institute on this helped create an optimistic atmosphere of investment, as present and future opportunities for investment were discussed by members of both the public an and private sectors. 7/22/1999 Peru and its National Election in 2000-Ricardo Noriega Salaverry La Jolla, California Dialogue with one of the leading candidates for president in Peru’s April 2000 elections. 7/26/1999 - 7/27/1999 Mexico Energy Roundtable Mexico City, Mexico This Roundtable was held in close collaboration wtih the Secretariat of Energy of Mexico, and focused on the Power Sector reform proposal as well as the petrochemical and Oil & Gas sectors. 9/2/1999 - 9/3/1999 International Executive Roundtable on Telecommunications in Mexico: Open Competition Mexico City, Mexico This roundtable focused on regulatory and trade issues of the telecommunications sector in a post-privatization environment and featured Minister Sacristán and COFETEL President Nicolín Fisher as keynote speakers. 9/23/1999 - 9/24/1999 Fall Board Meeting La Jolla, California Semi-annual meeting of the Institute Board of Directors. 9/23/1999 First Americas’ Forum and 15th Anniversary Celebration La Jolla, California The first Americas’ Forum was a full-day conference bringing together leaders from around the hemisphere to discuss critical political and social issues affecting Latin America both now and in the next century. 9/23/1999 15th Anniversary Dinner Celebration La Jolla, California Dinner featured Ex-President of Bolivia, Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada, a past presidential recipient of the Institute’s Leadership of the Americas Award, as the guest speaker. 9/27/1999 - 9/28/1999 Brazil Energy Roundtable `99 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil This roundtable, held in close collaboration with Eletrobrás, focused on the last phase of the Brazilian power sector privatization and the future role of Eletrobrás. 10/9/1999 SaludAmericas 1999 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Sixth annual conference on Latin America's health sector trends, specific industry updates and country reforms including regulation, challenges facing Latin American countries and partnership opportunities, both private-private and public-private. 10/21/1999 - 1/30/2000 Art Exhibit: The Cities Series and Other Recent Work of Lawrence Veit La Jolla, California A reception opened the art exhibit in the Copley International Conference Center of selected paintings and sculpture by artist Lawrence Veit of Del Mar, California. The exhibit remained through January 2000. 11/4/1999 - 11/5/1999 Mexico `99 Health Roundtable Mexico City, Mexico This roundtable focused on policies that would facilitate the participation of the private sector in healthcare activities and the decentralization reforms undertaken by the IMSS. 11/9/1999 - 11/10/1999 Telecom-IT Americas '99 La Jolla, California Fourth annual conference on telecommunications and information technology focusing on Latin America. Topics included regulatory and institutional innovations, new privatizations and telecom market trends in the region. 11/18/1999 - 11/19/1999 Emerging Issues for the Andean Mining Sector Santiago, Chile In cooperation with the Canadian and Chilean Governments, and co-sponsored by LatinoMinería, this conference focused on hazardous waste, technological innovation, mine closure regulations, capital markets, community relations and water rights. 11/18/1999 George Shultz Award Dinner Coronado, California The Institute’s Board of Directors honored The Honorable George P. Shultz, former U.S. Secretary of State with its Leadership in the Americas Award at a black tie gala dinner dance on November 18 at Loews Coronado Bay Resort. 11/30/1999 - 12/1/1999 Constructing and Operating Intermodal Networks in the Americas Coral Gables, Florida A hemisphere-wide event focused on efforts to link and integrate transportation systems throughout the hemisphere with a particular emphasis on progress made toward intermodal compatibility in surface transportation sectors. 12/2/1999 - 12/3/1999 Venezuela Energy Roundtable `99 Caracas, Venezuela Roundtable focused on the recently approved Electricity Law that could open the doors to increased participation by the private sector in generation and distribution. |
