This executive forum will offer updates on Natural Gas and LNG supply and demand, legal and regulatory issues, financial and investment perspectives, transportation and shipping, and conclude with regional and project discussions. 2/28/2005 Speaker Series: Gaëtan Lavertu, Canada’s Amb. to Mexico Deutz Conference Room, Institute of the Americas Mr. Lavertu became Canada’s Ambassador to Mexico in July, 2003. He is a career diplomat who has spent much of his working life in Europe and Latin America. Before his current post he served as Canada’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs. Trade between Canada and Mexico has increased by more than 250 percent since NAFTA came into force, and continues to grow by an average of approximately ten percent every year. Amb. Eugenio Elorduy became governor of the State of Baja California in 2001 for a 6-yr term. A member of PAN since 1968, he served as the State’s Finance Minister from 1989-1995, as Mayor of Mexicali from 1995-1998. 4/7/2005 José Cuervo Tequila Talk: Felipe Calderón Hinojosa Weaver Center, IOA Felipe Calderón served as Secretary of Energy of Mexico. He was an outspoken supporter of reforms and is quoted as saying “if we want jobs, want to grow and compete, let’s bring investment to our country. To drive away investment is to drive away employment.” Today, Felipe Calderón aspires to the PAN’s candidacy for the next presidential elections. He will talk about the elections and Mexico’s political and economic outlook. The conference will discuss practical policy oriented examples and will include in-depth workshops on how to plan and implement these programs. 4/22/2005 Strengthening the Contribution of Mexican Corporate Philanthropy to Civil Society México, D.F. The Institute is completing a one-year study that identifies the major obstacles that impede civil society, business and government from cooperating as fully as they should. He became mayor of Tijuana in 1992, serving for the usual three-year term, and is currently Senator for the PAN representing Baja California in the Mexican Congress. The Institute of the Americas is organizing this one-day event in collaboration with PFC Energy. The central theme will be an analysis of the implications for energy policy as a result of upcoming elections in Latin America.
