Public Policies and Migration 2009

Institute’s migration seminars bring to the forefront areas of common ground in terms of government policies and successful programs to service migrants, tackle the complexities of migration in order to correct inaccurate perceptions, and challenge the conventional wisdom when it comes to dealing with migration. To do so, the program incorporates these components:

• Analysis of information on recent, relevant academic studies.

• Information about the actual conditions migrants experience at the borders, the programs that exist to defend them, educate them, or care for them.

• Exploration of the diversity of opinion in the US regarding migration issues and of foreigners about how illegal migration is handled.

• Discussion about the outlook for migration reform under president Obama, what he wants to do and what he can do about migration.

• Sharing of information among researchers, and representatives of government agencies, and organizations that are dealing with the causes, effects, and resolution of migration issues. The program will be delivered in Spanish and should be of special interest to mid-ranking government officials, agencies and non-profit organizations working on migration issues, academics conducting research, and journalists.
