This training workshop, organized by the Institute of the Americas, will be held from February 17 to February 21, 2020 at the UADE campus located on Lima 775 – C1073AAO in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This training is designed to provide secondary school science and mathematics instructors with innovative project-based teaching pedagogy and lesson plans to engage and inspire their students to pursue advanced studies in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEAM). Instructors will listen to presentations and participate in hands-on sessions, expand and update their scientific knowledge, and develop and present team projects to a panel of judges. Given each workshop session builds upon another and that instructors are assigned to teams to work on projects for formal presentation, instructors must agree to attend all five days of the workshop. Some key topics to be covered include: Project-Based Learning as a Strategy for STEM Teaching; Interdisciplinary Methodologies; Teamwork and Synergy; School Research Methodology; and, the Importance of Critical Thinking. Two primary focus areas will be biotech and biology, and mathematics. As the agenda is finalized, physics or chemistry may be added. Teachers will complete the workshop having: an understanding of project-based learning and its application in teaching STEAM subjects; experience conducting lab experiments; interactive lesson plans to implement in their own classrooms with minimal resources; new or updated scientific knowledge; and, be a member of the Institute’s workshop instructors group in which instructors communicate with one another sharing teaching experiences and new classroom projects and lesson plans.
Teachers will be able to appropriate a rich practical experience both in the classroom and laboratory, as well as teaching strategies that will help them provide an exciting and accessible way to engage their students. It is a valuable professional advancement opportunity for teachers so they can incorporate a creative and innovative instruction into their classes. The end purpose is to empower and encourage students to become the scientific leaders of the 21st century.
Participants will have the unique opportunity to not only collaborate with their Argentine colleagues, but with recognized university professors, and after the workshop, with their Latin American colleagues in other countries fostering an exchange about STEAM teaching challenges, and forming an idea and support network beyond the workshop.
