The Danilo Medina government assumed office in August. Topping the list of priority policy areas for the new administration is energy, a vital, but complicated, cog in the Dominican Republic’s economy. Given the long-standing issues surrounding the sector, the government understands the need for action. Among the efforts under consideration are structural changes to the energy sector that include the creation of a new ministry of energy and mines, as well as a push to assess the nation’s offshore energy resource potential.
Over the last few years, the Dominican Republic strove to diversify its energy matrix via renewable energy projects and huge strides have been made incorporating natural gas. In addition, creating a culture of payment across all facets of the nation has been coupled with efforts to reverse years of inattention to system losses and lack of payment of electric bills. Power savings are critical as they underscore a fundamental challenge: the subsidy price tag. How the new Medina government intends to bring to bear further efforts on these fronts and broader structural modifications of the nation’s energy sector will be featured points of discussion during the forum.
