PRESENTATIONS
In April, Panama hosted the Seventh Summit of the Americas, an event made famous by the historic handshake between Presidents Obama and Castro. As Hemispheric heads of state met in Panama, the country continued its economic surge. Foreign Direct Investment grew 32% in the first quarter of 2015 and over the last five years, Panama has been one of the region’s fastest growing economies, averaging annual growth on the order of 8%. But its average annual GDP growth has also brought a commensurate rise in energy demand. Indeed, the government has prepared a power tender for the purchase of 350 MW of new capacity to come on line in 2018, followed by another tender for supply of an additional 350 MW to come on line in 2019.
The objective of this one-day executive roundtable is to foster dialogue between the government, private sector and civil society over the nation’s energy outlook and opportunities and challenges for maintaining its economic boom in the most sustainable manner possible. How to balance economic growth and energy infrastructure and particularly electric generation requirements will be key areas for discussion. Additionally, panels will debate the role for renewables, energy efficiency and if and where natural gas and LNG will play a part in Panama’s energy matrix. Regional integration will also be assessed both in terms of Central America and the Panama-Colombia interconnection project.
