The Institute of the Americas’ (IOA) Science and Innovation Summer Camp, an intensive two-week residential camp conducted in Spanish, is designed for high school students aged 14-18. It will be held June 23-July 6, 2019 at the IOA and the University of California, San Diego’s conference and laboratory facilities. Students from across the Americas are welcome to apply to attend the Camp.

2019 marks the Camp’s 10th anniversary. The Camp will underscore the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) for students interested in conducting scientific research, solving global and community challenges, and pursing engineering-related careers once they graduate from college. Students who have a demonstrated interest in the sciences coupled with an entrepreneurial spirit will selected to participate.

Camp participants will receive classroom instruction from university level professors, conduct field and lab experiments in state-of-the-art facilities, as well as work on projects designed to help them understand environmental issues, test scientific principles, build objects using engineering skills, enhance their robotics and coding abilities, learn about design thinking and proof of concept to create their own innovation, and improve their presentation projects which will be evaluated by a panel of judges. Likewise, they will learn about entrepreneurship learning to use their creativity, collaborate with others, and improve their presentation skills. Students will present science projects and an innovation before a panel of judges. Through their experiments and activities, students will learn how science can serve society and be inspired to become the next generation of scientific leaders.

Tuition is USD $4,500 which includes: university-level instruction; guest speakers; mentoring; 13 nights’ lodging; three meals and snacks each day; local transportation (airport pickup and drop off, and field trips); special events; 24 hours a day/7 days a week adult supervision; books and classroom and project materials; and, medical insurance.
