Want to learn more about careers with the Department of State?

It takes a special type of person to represent America abroad.  Serving as a U.S. diplomat requires fortitude, flexibility, and the ability to adapt to changing situations and different cultures.  The U.S. Department of State is looking for motivated individuals with sound judgment and leadership abilities.

Home from Paris and Phnom Penh, Foreign Service officers — and San Diego natives — Shane Christensen and Tony Lim are coming to the Institute of the Americas to speak about their careers in the Foreign Service.  Ambassador Charles Shapiro, president of the Institute of the Americas, will moderate the session

A California native, Shane Christensen joined the Foreign Service in 2000 and has been posted in Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates and New York where he served as Executive Assistant to the U.S. Ambassador to the UN. Mr. Christensen holds Master’s degrees from Cambridge and Harvard Universities and is currently posted at the U.S. Mission to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris.

Tony Lim is a Foreign Service Information Specialist.  He is posted in Cambodia and soon will be serving in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Mr. Lim speaks Chinese-Mandarin, Khmer, and German.  He received a BS in Computer Engineering from UC Irvine and a Master’s degree in International Studies from Concordia University of Irvine.
