While US-Cuba relations seemed interminably mired in the Cold War, changes since December 17 have been astonishing, with both nations making bold moves toward the normalization of relations.  Four months after President Barack Obama and President Raul Castro resolved to restore diplomatic ties, the two heads of state met in Panama at the Summit of the Americas and exchanged a symbolic handshake.   Although US restrictions still exist and the embargo is unlikely to be repealed, all in all these developments point to a promising future of reengagement between the two nations.

Please join us for a conversation with one of the nation’s foremost experts on Cuba, Dr. Richard Feinberg, a professor at UCSD’s School of International Relations and Pacific Studies and a senior fellow at The Brookings Institution.

Dr. Feinberg, who attended the Summit of the Americas, will discuss the evolving US-Cuba relationship.  Topics will include the significance of the Summit, the push to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, the steps toward opening embassies and the current state of US legislation on Cuba.

Following the discussion, we will host a special reception featuring a viewing of our art exhibit with Cuban artist Silfredo La O.  Silfredo will give us an introduction to his work, explaining the cultural iconography that characterizes his collection.
