The annual Science and Innovation Summer Camp, designed to underscore the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), will be held July 16-28, 2018 on the University of California, San Diego campus. It will host students from countries throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada, and the U.S., who will be selected based on their desire to conduct scientific research on the environment and climate change or pursue engineering-related careers once they graduate from college

During the two-week residential camp at the Institute of the Americas, students will receive classroom and field instruction from UC San Diego and regional college instructors, with projects designed to help them understand environmental issues, test scientific principles in the lab, learn more about engineering, and enhance robotics & coding skills by designing and constructing an underwater and Lego robot. The camp will also help students shape and build their innovative skills as they work in teams to develop creative scientific projects that will be evaluated by instructors during the camp’s final session.

Students will conduct experiments on ocean science and alternative energy sources. They will test water samples for toxic substances such as arsenic and coliform bacteria. They will build solar cars and investigate advanced informatics. Through these experiments and activities, they will learn how science can serve society, particularly in the areas of environment, climate change and energy conservation.

The basic requirements for this program are:

  • Age between 14-18 years
  • Have completed at least 1 science course
  • Current student at "pre-university" or "high school" level
  • Interest in studying Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics at university level.

Tuition is $4,500 and includes 13 nights’ lodging in La Jolla, three meals a day, local transportation (including San Diego airport pickup and drop off for non-local students), field visits, special events, unlimited Wi-Fi, books and laboratory materials, and medical insurance.

Cost for international students is $6,000. Please contact the STEM Team for additional questions.
