Rafael Santamaria is an Independent Senior Consultant in Upstream Oil & Gas with 15 years of international experience. His background includes a MSc in Energy Economics from Colorado School of Mines and a BSc in Petroleum Engineering. Rafael worked for more than 10 years at Ecopetrol, the Colombian National Oil Company (NYSE:EC, #300 Forbes Global 2000). From 2013 to 2018, he was a commercial lead for the International New Ventures and M&A team based in Houston, TX, USA. During that period, Ecopetrol evaluated opportunities around The Americas and West Africa and was awarded with upstream assets in USA, Mexico and Brazil. Rafael has been officially acknowledged by Ecopetrol’s high management in 2009, 2010 and 2017 for his active role.
Rafael has also been a University professor at Universidad de America (Bogota, Colombia) and Researcher in Geomechanics (Colombian Petroleum Institute). He’s member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN), European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), the Colombian Association of Petroleum Engineers (ACIPET), and the International Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). In the latter, he’s been an e-mentor to undergraduate students.
He enjoys travelling, and has lived in Houston (USA), Denver (USA), Manchester (UK), Bucaramanga and Bogota (COL). He and his British wife are currently based in Madrid (SPA).
