Through Executive Decree 1014, signed on March 9, 2020, the President of the Republic of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno appointed René Ortiz as the new Minister of Energy and Non-Renewable Natural Resources.

René Ortiz is an engineer by profession. He has completed his postgraduate studies at various universities and higher institutes in Ecuador and the United States. He has more than 40 years of experience in the hydrocarbon and energy industries.

He held important positions such as: Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Minister of Energy and Mines of Ecuador, founder and President of the Association of the Hydrocarbon Industry of Ecuador (AIHE), Chairman of the board of the Entrepreneurs National Association, member of the Institute of the Americas board, Vice President of the Council of Chambers and Associations of Production, among others.

The new Minister of Energy has affirmed that during his administration he will give priority to the most relevant issues of the sector, which are important for the country, according to the Government of President Lenín Moreno policies.
